Artist Statement

As a Black man born and bred in the American South, my work explores a conceptual world based on Afro-Fantasism which is my interpretation of a Southern cultural journey of surreal landscapes and magical negro encounters. Through mediums like printmaking, photography, videography, and interactive installations, my work creates a crossroads where Southern archetypes and Black royalty intersect. Exploring themes of Black culture, Southern identity, and exaggerated imaginations I bring the idolized concept of Black Southern Royalty to life. As the protagonist of my creative odyssey, I invite people to walk to the corner store as I bring this Black Southern Wonderland of culture, style, landscapes, and people to life.

“In this journey, I'm just a Brotha traveling down the dirt roads of a Black Southern Wonderland, inviting others to come and experience the black magic they've always wished to be a part of.”

Sir Will is a multi-disciplinary artist. Deeply inspired by the cultural styles and traditions developed by Black communities in the South, his work celebrates the vibrant essence of his upbringing. Growing up with limited access to representation of Black artists, Sir Will has forged his own artistic identity, drawing heavily from the South's warm colors, cars, and fashion and the influence of the strong women in his family.

Through photography, he transforms portraits into captivating, interactive pieces that connect to his history and heritage while celebrating the cultural significance of his roots. In addition to his personal art practice, Sir Will is a dedicated contributor to the Charlotte arts community, serving as an educator, mentor, and advocate. He co-founded BLKMRKTCLT, an artist collective and gallery space. His work bridges creative expression and community development, empowering others while pushing the boundaries of his craft.
